Mississippi Speech Therapy Internships and Classes

If you are hoping to pursue a career as a speech therapist in the state of Mississippi, then you should prepare yourself for a very rigorous and, thankfully, very fulfilling and stimulating, agenda of classes, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities. In order to become a licensed speech therapist in the state, you must possess at least a master's degree, which will typically require at least six years of schooling on average. During your educational career, you will take many different courses and will learn about many different aspects of the field. It is your job, during this phase, to learn all that you can and to take detailed notes to be reviewed earlier as you move through the licensing process.

If you choose to go the route of obtaining an associate's degree first and then a bachelor's degree, prepare yourself to get a very general overview of the field itself or of a related field. You will likely learn the basics of working as a speech therapists, the types of clients and/or patients you will likely be required to help, methods of therapy and the schools of thoughts behind them, and other basic responsibilities of the profession. Later, you will transfer these credits to a bachelor's degree program, where you will get a more in depth look at the field and at your career as a speech therapist.

The bachelor's degree program, whether you come into fresh out of high school, later in life, or after earning an associate's degree, is designed to provide all of the basic information discussed above, as well as more in depth information that will start to prepare you to actually work as a licensed speech therapist. While your education is nowhere near complete, you will begin to learn important facets of working in the field that will be sure to come up on your licensure examination. Also remember that your bachelor's program performance will determine what master's degree programs you are eligible for, so you'll want to take it very seriously indeed.

A master's degree program, which is the final step for most professional speech therapists currently working in the state, is designed to be that final guiding step. It will take everything you have learned in your previous educational pursuits and expand upon it with the goal of fully preparing you to achieve licensure and to enjoy success in the field.

After earning a master's degree, you might choose to go straight into an internship program or to seek licensure right away. Sometimes, these two will even overlap, with the experience gained at your internship counting toward your required amount of supervised experiential learning hours for licensure. An internship, which may be paid or unpaid, should always be treated as an actual job and taken very seriously. Not only is it an opportunity to build your resume and gain real experience in the field, experience which can lead to job offers later on, but it can also help you to meet and make important connections with other professionals. It is not uncommon for interns who do well to be offered jobs with the company with which they interned. Furthermore, connections made at this stage can lead to important opportunities later n down the road.

Licensure is the final step after all of your hard work. As mentioned briefly above, you will be required to complete a set number of experiential learning hours, depending on your education experience. You will also be required to completed national testing. Once done, however, you are truly ready and prepared for work in the field.
