Programs for Respiratory Therapy in Kentucky

When considering a respiratory therapy career within the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the first place to start is with an education. Kentucky requires that any individual wishing to become a certified respiratory therapist (CRT) obtain at least an associate degree from an accredited respiratory therapy program. However, there are a variety of different options for these programs that are available to meet the needs of students. This can include but is not limited to various degree options, traditional on-campus learning and online schools, just to name a few of the most common programs within Kentucky.

Degree Programs

Although Kentucky only requires an associate degree in order to obtain an entry-level position as a CRT, some may choose to obtain either a baccalaureate or master's degree in respiratory therapy. Those that wish to enter into an advanced career or want to specialize also choose this option. Most employers require that anyone within a management or director program possess at least a bachelor degree from an approved program. However, to seek gainful employment the prospective student needs to ensure that the Kentucky respiratory therapy program is fully accredited, otherwise they are ineligible for certification and/or licensure. These credentials are required in order to enter into the workforce.

Traditional On-Campus Learning

Traditional on-campus learning is available at several schools offering programs for respiratory therapy in Kentucky. This can include community colleges and four-year colleges and universities for example. While community colleges will only offer associate degree programs, those attending a four-year college or university will have the option of earning a baccalaureate program, depending on the individual learning institution. In these settings, the student attends class at designated times on specific days. Some may also incorporate online learning into the curriculum or have hybrid programs in which some coursework can actually be completed online. The majority of learning will still take place in the classroom setting though.

Online Education Programs

Those seeking a respiratory therapy degree in Kentucky are also eligible to take advantage of programs that are offered solely online. They entail the same coursework from required by the Commonwealth, just in a more convenient setting. Online colleges and universities in Kentucky may offer prospective students the ability to earn their associate, bachelor and even their master's degree online and the degree is no different from that offered at any other learning institution. This option is becoming increasingly attractive due to the number of students that may not be able to forego responsibilities and employment to return to school.

Choosing the Right Program

When considering a career as a respiratory therapist, choosing the right education program in Kentucky is the first step in getting started on a new career path. Due to the options that are available, the prospective student should weigh all of their options carefully. Convenience, costs and the quality of the education received are just a few of the important aspects to consider when finding a school that meets the needs of the unique individual.
