Occupational Therapy Jobs in Kansas

The availability of occupational therapy jobs in many cases allows professionals in this field the opportunity to choose from a variety of positions in a variety of locations throughout the country.

Picture, if you will, miles and miles of flat land for as far as the eye can see, and picture wide-open spaces and endless shoots of tall grass rising from the prairies. The state of Kansas has much to offer, but maybe its most impressive feature is the unassuming quality that it emits. Endless stretches of nothingness, flat land and grass is not supposed to be impressive, yet in this state that "nothingness" is as much an attraction as its shopping malls, night clubs, monuments and museums.

The state is almost a rectangle in shape and is in large part a component of the Great Plains. We mentioned the grass, but Kansas fields are equally, if not more so, known for the wheat that rises from them. While the state appears flat, it does rise about 3000 feet from east to west, but the rise is so gradual that it is imperceptible to the human eye.

Manufacturing of transportation equipment and industrial and computer machinery provides a large number of jobs in the state. Workers produce private planes, crude petroleum and coal products. Natural products include natural gas, helium and salt deposits.

The history of the Kansas territory and its towns has been well documented. The mere mention of Dodge City conjures imagines of cowboys, cattle, gunfights and saloons. Early explorers like Lewis and Clark and Stephen H. Long explored the territory that is now Kansas in the early 1800s. Outposts were set up to protect settlers headed west. Fort Leavenworth, Fort Scott and Fort Riley came into existence for this reason.

In Kansas, there are many occupational therapy positions in nursing homes and retirement and assisted living facilities. One of the most feared incidents in these facilities that house and provide care for older citizens is a fall. Slips and tumbles that would hardly be worth mentioning for younger people can be debilitating events for the elderly. These falls often lead to bruises, muscle and ligament damage and broken bones. In these incidents, because of the age of the patients and the limitations placed on the human body as it ages, the role of the therapist is even more vital.

Kansas also has many medical facilities in cities such as the capital city of Topeka, Wichita, Lawrence and Kansas City. There are many employment opportunities for therapists in these facilities. Occupational therapists work in public and private schools in the state. These positions offer stable employment with very good benefits in addition to an above average annual salary.

An occupational therapist in Kansas might find such sites as the boyhood home of general and president, Dwight D. Eisenhower worth visiting. The Eisenhower Library is housed in Abilene. Not necessarily a great place to visit, the federal penitentiary in Fort Leavenworth is one of the most infamous in the country.
