Requirements for becoming a Family Therapist in Indiana

Indiana has like most states strict requirements that you have to meet to be able to call yourself a professional therapist. They involve a specific amount of education and training, as well as meeting exam requirements and supervised practice. The first and most important necessity to do this job is to have at minimum a master's degree, or alternatively a doctoral degree that must be in marriage and family therapy, or a closely related field. So before you work on your education make sure that you are meeting what the board in Indiana requires for a closely related field. Also, double check that your school will meet the standards of the board.

Secondly, you also have to submit to a background check, where they determine if you have been convicted of a crime that would have a direct bearing on your ability to practice in the marriage and family therapy field. You must also prove that you are not under a disciplinary action by any licensing or certification from another state or area, where you're license has been revoked or you were at the time not able to practice marriage and family therapy, deemed unsafe, or an endangerment to the public.

There is also a fee that you will need to pay, as well as an exam that the board will have made in accordance to the board. As well as meeting all of these education requirements you also must have a term of clinical experience. In the state of Indiana you must complete two years of clinical experience, at least half of that experience must be treating clients who are seeking marriage and family therapy services. This experience must contain at the minimum one thousand hours, after you've gotten your degree, as well as that two hundred of those hours must be direct supervision.

While you are doing your supervised clinical practice you will have a supervisor that you can turn to to help you adjust to the demands and needs of the clients, they will also be making sure that you are meeting the needs of the clients, and are doing it in a proper and legal way. This is all to help make you into a professional therapist. Another thing to remember if you are looking to move is that the licensing procedures in each state are not the same; you will possibly have to meet different standards in different states. For instance if you are planning to move into Indiana, you will still have to meet their requirements even if you already have your license in another state. So, if you are planning to move into the state, or out, you will want to double check that your degree and other clinical training will meet the requirements of where you plan to live.

Once you meet the requirements you can then apply to take the examination, you will want to study because without passing the exam you won't be able to receive your licensee. These are not going to cover every step that you must meet, but it will give you a general overview of the major requirements that the state of Indiana says you must meet in order to becoming a practicing family and marriage therapist. There are many jobs available in the world of family therapy, from working with local governments, and the state government, to working in schools and working with the elderly or disabled. It can be a rewarding choice in career for anyone who is interested in helping people overcome the mental and emotional issues are faced.
