Is Washington a Good Place for a Behavioral Therapy Career?

It’s no secret that we are living in very troubled economic times. This can make people very cautious about making any career changes or entering into a new line of work. The good news, however, is that this doesn’t have to be the case for every career field. The field of behavioral therapy in the state of Washington, for example, is currently booming. Even though others around the globe are struggling to find jobs or are losing the jobs they already have, the behavioral therapy industry in the state is still going strong and showing no chances of slowing down.

Part of the reason for this is likely because of the shortage of qualified behavioral therapy professionals. Far too many people these days are opting out of higher education in favor of finding jobs they can do without going to college. As such, those who do attend school to receive a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree are not enough in number. That means that when a good, qualified candidate does become available, the employers will snatch him or her up right away in order to finally be able to get the job done right.

You’ll also be happy to know that behavioral therapists working in Washington bring home a higher salary per year than the average worker in the state will make. Some therapists, of course, do make more than others, but generally, all workers in the field will enjoy a lucrative pay. Things that can increase your salary significantly include opting for a higher level of education, living in  a Washington city where behavioral therapists are in very high demand, having years of experience working in the field, having been with a particular employer for a long amount of time, and having done the same job for an extended period of time.

In addition to great pay and almost guaranteed hiring, behavioral therapists enjoy excellent job security as well. Since good, qualified behavioral therapists are so hard to come by, they are very rarely let go unless they have done something against the rules. So, as a behavioral therapist, all you have to do is to keep your nose clean and you will find that you will run little to no risk of losing the job you’ve worked so hard to obtain. That is something that, unfortunately, is not true of most of today’s jobs.

Even though there are so many wonderful benefits to working as a behavioral therapist in the state of Washington, we’d like to make it clear that there are negative sides to the job as well and that it is not for everyone. Behavioral therapists, for example, often work long and very emotionally draining days. After all, they deal with severely troubled people all day long; that’s bound to take a toll on anyone after a while. They also have to complete years of schooling in order to have success in the field and are expected to continue their educations even while they are already working in the field.
Quite simply, not everyone is cut out for this level of commitment! Some people simply do not have the right personality types either. Ideally, a behavioral therapist will be someone who has a strong desire to help others, of course, but who will also exhibit many other important traits. These include being hard working, ethical, good listeners, sympathetic and compassionate, non-judgmental, understanding, and capable of separating oneself and one’s emotions from the day to day work. Therapists who have all or most of these traits generally enjoy their work more and will have longer, more successful careers.

If you can keep both the positive and negative aspects of being a behavioral therapist in check and if you’re willing to work hard to get a strong educational foundation, you can definitely enjoy work as a behavioral therapist in the state of Washington. If, after reading all of this factual information, you’re still interested in the field and feel that you would be a good fit for a behavioral therapy position, then that’s a pretty good sign that you will meet with happiness in the workplace for years to come.
