Behavioral Therapy Job Outlook in Rhode Island

It’s no secret that today’s economy is a troubled and difficult one. As such, you are probably concerned about entering into any new career or educational path. When it comes to the field of behavioral therapy, however, there is no reason for this type of concern, especially in the state of Rhode Island. Though Rhode Island is a small state, or perhaps because it is, there is an overwhelming need for qualified behavioral therapy professionals to work in the field. This means that, upon obtaining a behavioral therapy education, you stand a very high chance of being immediately hired. In addition to this, you’ll have excellent job security and can enjoy a more lucrative salary than the average professional in the state. Obviously, then, there’s no better time than now to seize life and to start making your career goals come true.

Obviously, an education is the first step to entering the behavioral therapy career field. You can choose to obtain any degree that you like: an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, or a PhD. Of course, where you will have to start your educational quest depends upon your current degree  or educational level. A bachelor’s degree is required for a master’s degree, and a master’s degree is required for a PhD. It is important to note, however, that the degree areas need not always be related in terms of subject. In fact, sometimes a diverse educational experience can work for you instead of against you.

We said above that you can earn an associate’s degree to get you started in the field, but it’s very imperative that you understand that you cannot find actual work in the field with only this degree. Instead, you can use this degree as a starting point, as a cheap way to begin your education. Associate’s degrees are very general and can be completed in two years or even less. Any credits that you earn can then be transferred to an accredited bachelor’s degree program to give you a nice little jumpstart.

The bachelor’s degree alone is only moderately useful in the behavioral therapy field. With it, you can work as an assistant behavioral therapist or in other less prestigious, less well paid positions only. This is why the bachelor’s degree is typically only the start of one’s educational pursuits in this field. However, you will need it and from an accredited institution in order to pursue higher levels of education, so don’t overlook its vast importance.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree, your next step is the master’s degree. This is what most behavioral therapy professionals working in the state will have in terms of education. Master’s degree programs are intense, but the right one can adequately prepare you to work and have success in the behavioral therapy field. These degrees can be earned either fully or partially online, which is ideal for working adults, and typically take anywhere from one to three years to earn.

If you want to be one step ahead of the competition, then a PhD is for you. A PhD, however, is not something that happens overnight. In fact, it takes, on average, about five years to complete and is quite rigorous. As such, most people will work, usually in the field, as the complete their study. In fact, some educational programs will require you to work in the field as you pursue your education. While this degree is not necessary for most jobs in the field, it can significantly increase your professional standing, as well as your salary.

Once you have your education, you must become licensed by the state to practice therapy. You might also consider certification in certain areas in order to help you have a higher chance of success in your area of expertise. In addition to this, gaining experience in the field, if you have not already  done so, is key. This can be done by taking on an entry level type position in the field or, better yet, by completing a paid or unpaid internship with a firm or practice that is closely related to the type of work you would like to do.
