Can I Get a Behavioral Therapy Degree Online in New Mexico?

In today’s increasingly technological world, more and more people are choosing to obtain their educations either partially or completely online. Some colleges and universities exist only in the online world, while others are actual physical institutions with online components for some or all of their courses. Online education is ideal for those who need to work around their own busy schedules or who cannot find the exact program that they want at a local college or university. In New Mexico, which has a shortage of good colleges and universities, online education is particularly popular for those who wish to pursue careers in behavioral therapy.

It is completely possible to get a degree in behavioral therapy by attending all online classes or some online classes in addition to physical classes. However, you really have to be careful about choosing a reputable online college or university. There are many colleges and universities out there that are not actually accredited or that are only accredited in one particular state or area, meaning that it is possible to earn a “degree” that is actually useless in the long run. Your chances of encountering such a fraudulent institution are less likely if you attend a physical college with an online component, but you still must be careful, no matter where you choose to attend classes, that all accreditations are in order and that you’re getting what you’re paying for.

Just as with traditional classes, you will be able to choose from a large number of different degree programs in behavioral therapy. You can earn an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, or even your PhD online. You can also earn certain certifications that deal with more specialized areas of behavioral therapy online. It’s important that you know the truth about each of these degrees however.

An associate’s degree, for example, is not going to do you any good in the behavioral therapy field unless you transfer the credits to a bachelor’s degree program. Many online colleges and universities will make big promises about what you can do with such a degree, but the truth is, your choices are really limited, and you’ll need to pursue at least a bachelor’s degree in order to work in the behavioral therapy field successfully.
Bachelor’s degree take four years to complete in standard or traditional classes, but they are often earned in much less time by online students. With a bachelor’s degree, you won’t be ready to go out and start practicing therapy upon graduation, but you can work in very entry level positions in the field. Ideally, for actual therapy positions and other more lucrative positions, you’ll want to continue your education at some point, but a bachelor’s degree can be an excellent start out point.

After you’ve earned a bachelor’s degree online, you can then choose to earn your master’s degree and, after that, your doctoral degree. A master’s degree is the most common degree for professionals in the field. While you can earn that online, you will most likely have some classes that meet “in person,” so it’s wise to pick a college or university with a local branch or campus for higher level degree programs. The same is true for PhDs.
As mentioned earlier, certifications are offered online by many colleges and universities as well. Keep in mind, however, that a certification is not a degree, and will not replace or serve as one. You can also not become licensed to practice therapy online. These are all things that must be done “in the real world” in order to count.
