How to Become a Behavioral Therapist in Louisiana

If you live in the state of Louisiana and have dreams of becoming a behavioral therapist, then you’re starting off on the right foot by simply being in the right place! Louisiana is bursting with opportunities for aspiring behavioral therapists, since it has many great colleges and universities with educational programs to help you get started. Furthermore, after you graduate, you’ll find that the job market for behavioral therapists in Louisiana is excellent. There are always positions opening up, and behavioral therapists are very well paid and enjoy good job security and a wide range of job choices, no matter where in the state they live.

Obviously, though, to be eligible for these awesome opportunities, you have to have the right educational background. All jobs in behavioral therapy, from the lowliest most entry-level position to the most prestigious and well paid one, will require a degree of some sort from an accredited college or university. Also, it’s much easier to get hired for positions if you possess some level of experience and have a strong resume. Obtaining these things isn’t as hard as you might think; you just have to be willing to commit yourself to working hard for the success you wish to achieve.

Education should definitely be the very first thing that you focus on, because it’s the most important. You should research the exact behavioral therapy job you wish to have and its requirements before you get started, since different jobs will require different levels of education and you’ll want to pick the right educational program for your career goals. Generally, the best jobs in the field will require a master’s degree or even better, a PhD, so you’ll want to aim high when mapping out your educational path.

If you’re just starting out with your education, you’ll need to first obtain an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field. The associate’s degree will be virtually useless until you transfer your credits to a bachelor’s degree program, so don’t think you can get a two year degree and then find work in the field; it doesn’t work that way. The bachelor’s degree, on the other hand, can be used for very entry level positions in the field, such as behavioral therapy assisting, but it’s not the ultimate goal of most people who come into the behavioral therapy field.

As mentioned above, master’s degree or PhDs are really your best bet for success. It is not uncommon for people to earn master’s degrees and then work as they receive their PhDs, which is something to consider if money is an issue for you. Also, most higher level educational programs are designed with working adults in mind, which means that you can live your life, have a family, or take care of any other responsibilities all while going back to school. Some classes may even be held online for those who have busy schedules, and there are even some higher level educational programs that are held completely online.

Keep in mind as well that you can pursue a master’s degree or a PhD without starting from scratch even when your previous education is not related to behavioral therapy. There are so many programs in the state that gladly accept students from unrelated academic backgrounds, as this provides diversity to the educational program. Once you have your education, you’re almost ready to land a career. You just have to gain some experience through an internship first. When your resume is looking great and you’ve got that degree in your hand, then you’re ready to take on the world!
