Things to Consider when Becoming a Behavioral Therapist in Indiana
Indiana residents will be happy to know that there are a ton of positions for qualified behavioral therapists throughout the state. However, it is important to note that while behavioral therapy is a lucrative and prestigious career field, it is not one that comes easily or that is for everyone. Far too many people enter into the field vastly unprepared for the many challenges and responsibilities it will entail. As such, they often end up not finishing their educational paths or, even worse, spending years studying in the field only to work briefly and then find out they are not cut out for the job. The best way to keep this from happening to you is to put a lot of thought and consideration into your career choice before coming to any major decisions.
First and foremost, it is important to understand exactly what it is a behavioral therapist does. This might sound simplistic, but you would be surprised at the large amount of people who go into the field and begin work or study without having a clear idea of what is expected of them. A behavioral therapist can best be defined as a psychological or clinical therapist who works to help clients change and modify “bad” or negative behaviors and replace them with positive ones. An addiction to alcohol, for example, is a negative behavior. Therefore, a behavioral therapist might work to help such an individual overcome that addiction and learn more effective and positive methods of coping with the difficulties of life.
Of course, not all behavioral therapists will work in the traditional office setting. In fact, a vast majority of practicing professionals in the state of Indiana do not. That—this flexibility—is one of the things that many people love about the field. As a behavioral therapist, you might choose to work in a substance abuse or rehabilitation center, in a hospital, in the school system, in the prison system, the judicial system, or even in a managerial or research type job. What you will be able to do and your pay will be determined by the education that you possess.
To practice in the most highly paid areas of the field, you are going to need a very high degree of education—at the very least, a master’s degree; it’s better yet if you have a doctoral degree. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not consider the serious amount of study it will take them to reach their career goals and end up wasting a lot of time and money in the process. Therefore, it’s important for you to be realistic about both your educational path and what you plan to do with the degrees you receive and pay for. While it is possible to work in some level—a very low one—with only a bachelor’s degree, a higher level of education is really your best bet. Research a lot of different programs and all your options to help you come to a final decision.
