Behavioral Therapy Training in Illinois

Illinois residents who think they might possibly like to work as behavioral therapists should be aware that this is not a career field that can be entered into lightly. Behavioral therapy is something that takes years and years of dedicated study to master and, once you’re actually working in the field, means even more effort and determination. While being a behavioral therapist may be lucrative and personally rewarding, it is also difficult and sometimes draining. In short, it’s definitely not for everyone, and you should think long and hard about whether or not it’s what you really want to do before you start your long educational path.

With that said, those who still hope to become behavioral therapists will need to first pursue at least a bachelor’s degree if they have not already done so. While an associate’s degree may be obtained cheaply and quickly, it is important to note that it is of no real use unless you plan to transfer the credits earned to a bachelor’s degree program. With a bachelor’s degree, you will not be able to actually work as a behavioral therapist, but you can work in the field. This can be a great way to earn money and experience while you pursue higher levels of education, so it’s definitely something to think about.

After you have a bachelor’s degree, it’s time to start earning your master’s degree, which will be much more in depth and focused on the exact career that you wish to have. It is important to note that if you have an unrelated bachelor’s degree, you do not necessarily have to obtain another one to be admitted to a master’s degree program. In fact, there are many masters’ level programs that happily accept students from diverse educational backgrounds.

In Illinois, you can easily find work in the field with your master’s degree. You should be aware, however, that you will be limiting yourself in terms of salary and in terms of the positions you can hold if you do not pursue and earn a PhD at some point. Keep in mind that PhD programs, though they typically take about five years to complete, are designed with working professionals in mind, so they are far from impossible to obtain. Plus, once you have one, success and prestige in your field is basically a guarantee.

Of course, not everyone chooses to work in the field while they pursue their education. If this is the case for you, then you’ll want to make sure that you supplement your education with as much experience as possible. Since it can be difficult to get a job without experience and difficult to get experience without a job, a sort of catch-22, your best bet is to obtain an internship. An internship is an experiential learning opportunity that will teach you a great deal about working as a behavioral therapist and that will also help you to build your resume and successfully start your career.
